Driving In Snow/Ice Conditions
Driving in the snow and on ice can be dangerous. There are a number of precautions you can take to lessen your chances of being in a winter weather-related accident.
- Be aware of severe weather. There can be times when transportation officials may recommend not driving. Unless it's an emergency, heed this advice and stay indoors until the worst of it passes.
- Keep sufficient distance between you and the car in front of you. If you hit ice or snow, you may not be able to stop in time. It's always safer to keep a greater distance between you and the other vehicles on the road in poor weather conditions.
- Clear off all snow and ice from your windows and roof. Visibility is crucial during adverse weather driving. Do not simply rely on your defrosting mechanism to do the work for you. Clearing off the snow from the top of your car is also important. If you have ever been on the highway and then suddenly seen a hunk of snow fly off the car in front of you, you will recognize this hazard.
- Do not slam on your brakes. Many vehicles now have anti-lock brakes that do the pumping for you, but simply slamming on your brakes when your car is skidding does not help. If you are sliding, instead of braking hard, first take your foot off the accelerator and try to gain control.
- Check your tire pressure. Freezing weather may make your tire pressure drop. While checking your tire pressure, make sure they are not worn out as well. You will need all the traction you can get when driving in icy conditions.
- Remember that poor road conditions still exist; they are just covered in snow. Now the dangers on the road are less visible. Drive with caution.
- Drive within your comfort. Do not push past speeds you are comfortable driving in. There are some drivers who do not adjust their driving habits to match the weather. Make sure you are driving within your own limits. Some large vehicle owners may feel immune to adverse conditions because their vehicle has the size and weight to handle the snow. No vehicle is fully immune to the weather.
No matter what the weather is like, accidents can happen at any time and without warning. Always maintain a safe distance between cars and remember to drive within the legal speed limit.
