Arrest in Dover Casino Leads to Drug Charges

A 20-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man have been charged with possession of heroin after being arrested at a Dover Casino. According to a WMDT news report, the arrest occurred on the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino on DuPont Highway in Dover. Witnesses reportedly saw the woman ask guests for painkillers and that security observed her exchange a plastic baggie with a man. During the arrest, they allegedly found 403 baggies of heroin. The man and woman face multiple charges including possession of heroin, possession with intent to deliver and conspiracy in the 2nd degree.

Each state has unique regulations and laws regarding controlled dangerous substances. Delaware, for example, classifies drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and heroin as well as the compounds used to manufacture them as controlled substances. Anyone found in possession of these substances can face serious criminal penalties.

In Maryland, the Governor-Elect Larry Hogan has announced that his lieutenant governor will attempt to reduce heroin-related crimes statewide. According to a WAMU news report, the new governor plans to make good on his campaign promise to declare a state of emergency and crack down on drug use. Heroin-related deaths in Maryland spiked 88 percent between 2011 and 2013, so it is not a surprise that something will be done. What is unclear is how many people will face unnecessarily harsh criminal penalties as a result of the crackdown.

If you are facing drug charges, it is crucial that you take action to protect your rights. Do not answer any questions from the authorities and ask to speak to a Maryland criminal defense attorney right away. A drug crime conviction involving possession of heroin, in Maryland, can result in up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.

If you have been charged with possession of heroin, there are many different defense strategies that should be considered. It may be possible to fight the charges, have evidence dismissed or to negotiate for reduced penalties. A knowledgeable Maryland drug crime defense attorney will also attempt to pursue alternative sentencing options.
