Maryland Man Arrested with K9 Assist and Charged with DUI

K9 unitA failed traffic stop turned violent pursuit has led to a Maryland man being charged with DUI and various other offenses.

Official charges in Delaware are pending.

According to the trooper who spotted the driver and attempted a traffic stop, the driver reportedly drove 78 MPH in a 50 MPH zone and drove through a red light signal.

When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to stop, drove through another red light, and lost a front tire as the vehicle approached the highway. The vehicle continued driving while sparks flew from the exposed rim until it came to stop near a mobile home park.

The suspect ignored the trooper’s orders and abandoned the vehicle to flee towards a residence on foot. Assisted by the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit, the Maryland State trooper pursued the suspect on foot and they were able to surround the driver.

Though surrounded, the suspect actively resisted arrest and began to fight with officers, police say. Cecil County Sheriff’s K9 was deployed during the altercation to prevent harm to officers.

With the K9 assist, the suspect, a 42-year-old man from Elkton, was placed under arrest and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver was charged with second degree assault, resisting arrest, fleeing and eluding police, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, and several other traffic related offenses.

It was also discovered after the pursuit, the driver’s vehicle was wanted by Delaware State Police for a hit and run collision that occurred before the attempted traffic stop.
