Avoiding a DUI

Avoiding a DUI

An arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) can be devastating. Not only does a DUI put yourself and other drivers at risk for injury, but it also puts your career and your finances in jeopardy. While the attorneys at Alpert Schreyer, LP are here to help if you are arrested for DUI or DWI, the best course of action is to try and avoid driving drunk in the first place. Here are some tips for avoiding a DUI:

Select a Designated Driver

If you plan on drinking with friends, the safest thing you can do is designate a reliable person to drive everyone home at the end of the night. It is important that this person understands their role and can be trusted to uphold his or her end of the bargain.

Use Uber or Lyft

If you don’t have a friend to drive you home after a night of drinking, rideshare apps can be very helpful in finding a safe way home. Lyft and Uber are easy and affordable ways to avoid a DUI.

Make Sure You Eat

One of the best ways to prevent yourself from getting intoxicated is to make sure that you’re eating while you’re drinking. Eating will help you fill up and make it less likely that you will drink to excess.

Count Your Drinks

When you’re having fun, it can be easy to lose track of time and how much you’ve had to drink. Try and make sure to count your drinks throughout the night. Limiting yourself to one drink per hour and then stopping drinking a while before you have to drive can ensure that you keep your blood alcohol content (BAC) below the legal limit.

Drive Safely

Even if you’ve only had a couple of drinks, you should still be extra careful and obey traffic laws while driving. You don’t want to give a police officer a reason to pull you over. All of your attention should be on the road, so no chatting on the phone or texting while driving.
