NFL Draft Prospect Dak Prescott Arrested for DUI
Just a short time before the NFL draft, former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. This arrest comes as a surprise given Prescott’s spotless reputation and status as a leader in the Mississippi football community. Prescott was arrested at around 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 while driving a white 2016 Cadillac Escalade in the Cotton District in Starkville, MS, near the Mississippi State campus. There are no blood alcohol test results for the arrest, but the football star was cited for being under the influence of intoxicating liquor. Sometimes called a “common law DUI” in Mississippi, this charge can be given without a BAC test based on an officer’s subjective judgment of the driver’s condition. Thankfully, no collisions occurred and no one was injured as a result of the incident.
An Unexpected Turn for a Promising Career
Described as one of the best players in Mississippi State history thanks to setting new passing records in every category and leading the team to a first place victory in 2014, Prescott was projected to be drafted somewhere between the second and fourth rounds in the upcoming April NFL draft. He did wind up getting drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round and many experts believe he slipped down in the draft because of this incident. With infamous draft busts like Ryan Leaf and, more recently, Johnny Manziel and their well documented issues with alcohol and substance abuse, teams are less and less willing to take a chance with a high draft pick on someone with this kind of baggage.
Prescott still became the first quarterback drafted from Mississippi State since the 1970s. Analysts stated that while this unfortunate did hurt him some, Prescott has plenty of goodwill with the Cowboys and may still be able to move forward successfully. The question of whether Prescott can handle being a quarterback in the NFL, undeniably a role with even more pressure and scrutiny than leading a college team, is still up for debate.
Will One Poor Choice Undermine a Stellar Reputation?
Teammates and coaches described Prescott as a team leader with no previous criminal history or legal troubles, and praised him for handling the pressure of being the face of a team with incredible composure. He had spent the Saturday morning before his arrest hosting a camp at Starkville High School where over 200 students gathered to participate. With a reputation as a good-character athlete and passionate about community service, this recent arrest is quite a departure from Prescott’s previous records and is no doubt a troubling personal experience for the football pro. Prescott issued a statement to NFL.com stating that he takes complete responsibility for his actions and is remorseful for his misjudgment. Prescott promised to show his true character through his actions in the future.
Even good guys like Prescott make mistakes, and no one deserves to be punished for the rest of their life.
