An accident involving a fire truck and a tractor-trailer on the Capital Beltway near Route 50 in Maryland during the early morning of January 30 caused seven people to be sent to the hospital. The aftermath of the crash on the inner loop caused all lanes in both directions on the Capital Beltway to be closed for multiple hours, according to The Washington Post.
Reports indicate that a fire truck from Prince George’s County was returning to the station after helping with an accident when it was rear-ended by a big rig around 3:00 am. The collision caused both vehicles to overturn and also caused an SUV to crash during the second half of the accident. Four of the injured victims were firefighters from West Lanham and all seven victims were taken to Prince George’s Hospital Center with serious injuries. One firefighter was said to be in critical condition.
Almost all lanes of traffic had been reopened by 10:00 am, but delays lasted through the day.
